Laying down in bed or sitting on the couch comfortably all day- on social media or watching

television- seems like just a normal day for a lot of people.

Unfortunately, this comfortable sedentary activity causes health risks that affect people negatively. There are many physical effects of living a sedentary lifestyle, and many could be prevented through physical activity.

First, Let's Talk Briefly About What a Sedentary Lifestyle is!

A sedentary lifestyle includes a lifestyle with very low energy expenditure, such as: laying down or sitting down for long periods of time (Kandola, 2018).

Now That We Know What a Sedentary Lifestyle is, What Are the Risks Then?

There are many risks to be aware of when having an inactive lifestyle. Many of the health risks stated below could be prevented at early stages through physical activity in everyday life. Research in sedentary lifestyles linked these health conditions (Kandola, 2018):

  • Obesity

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Cancer (some types)

  • CVD (cardiovascular disease)

  • Early death

  • Reduces metabolism

  • Reduces the ability to control blood sugar and blood pressure

Having a more active lifestyle could help reduce and prevent the development of diseases related to sedentary lifestyles (Kandola, 2018).
